OpenText named a Leader in the 2026 IDC MarketScape for Worldwide Digital Fax

Fax Aviator brings agentic AI to fax, backed by a deep partner ecosystem, flexible deployment, and proven interoperability.

OpenText has been named a Leader in the IDC MarketScape: Worldwide Digital Fax 2026 Vendor Assessment (#US54136326, September 2026).

We believe this recognition reflects the trust that more than 100,000 fax customers place in OpenText every day, along with the steady investment we continue to make in cloud, AI, and security across our digital fax portfolio.

IDC MarketScape evaluated eight vendors on both current capabilities and future strategy, looking closely at how each one is handling the move from analog lines to modern digital platforms.

IDC MarketScape vendor analysis model is designed to provide an overview of the competitive fitness of technology and suppliers in a given market. The research methodology utilizes a rigorous scoring methodology based on both qualitative and quantitative criteria that results in a single graphical illustration of each supplier’s position within a given market. The Capabilities score measures supplier product, go to market and business execution in the short term. The Strategy score measures alignment of supplier strategies with customer requirements in a three to five year timeframe. Supplier market share is represented by the size of the icons.

Fax has moved well beyond the fax machine

We believe the IDC MarketScape is clear about what has changed. Fax is no longer being judged as a standalone legacy channel. According to the report, “By replacing legacy infrastructure with digital platforms, organizations can reduce operating costs, improve accessibility to business information, strengthen reliability, enhance security, automate workflows, and integrate fax processes with document management systems, business applications, and other enterprise technologies. As a result, digital fax is increasingly regarded as an extension of an organization’s broader information and document management strategy, rather than as a standalone communications technology.”

The pressure to modernize is also real. Carriers are retiring copper lines, sometimes with only a few months of notice, and in healthcare, new CMS rules keep pushing toward electronic exchange through APIs. For anyone still faxing over analog lines, we believe the IDC MarketScape’s message is simple. Migration planning now has a clock on it.

Agentic AI is now the heart of fax

This is the part of the report I’m most excited about. The IDC MarketScape is clear, “AI has shifted from a nice-to-have add-on to a core differentiator across the fax landscape.” It also states, “a digital fax road map that shows the ability to evolve with changing business requirements and reflects an understanding of how and where work is evolving, including a credible plan for embedding agentic AI and broader document intelligence capabilities rather than treating fax as a standalone, legacy channel.”

The IDC MarketScape also advises buyers to “check where your fax provider stands on its agentic AI road map and whether that direction fits your organization’s strategic priorities.”

We believe that is exactly where we have been building. OpenText™ Fax Aviator™, which we introduced at HIMSS 2026, is an agentic AI layer for OpenText™ Fax built on Google Vertex AI. Instead of people opening, reading, and forwarding every fax by hand, a set of AI agents does that work and people step in where their judgment matters. Today those agents include:

  • Focused inbox – Sorts incoming faxes so the urgent ones rise to the top and nothing important gets buried.
  • Route – Reads each fax and sends it to the right person, team, or system automatically.
  • Summarize and Highlight – Turns long faxed documents into quick summaries with the key details called out.
  • Extract – Pulls data out of faxes and into the business applications where it is needed.
  • User Assist and Admin Assist – Give end users and administrators an AI helper for everyday questions and tasks.

The results are real, the IDC MarketScape notes. And we are not stopping there. Our roadmap adds Fax MCP for financial services and insurance so fax can act as a native step inside our customers’ AI workflows, along with multipacket handling and AI prompt access. We are also adding more agents as we go.

As Evan Hardie, Senior Director of Imaging, Printing and Document Solutions research at IDC, noted, “vendors have made significant progress moving fax beyond a standalone, legacy channel.” We believe Fax Aviator is a big part of that story for OpenText.

Here are some key strengths that the IDC MarketScape noted:

Significant partner ecosystem to boost its go-to-market efforts. OpenText’s 1000+ partner network remains a fax go-to-market differentiator, helping win targeted vertical business and accelerate cloud/integration efforts.

Fax any way you want it. OpenText delivers fax via public/private cloud and on premises, with Standard, Premier, and Signature support tiers.

Interoperability and reliability. OpenText interacts with virtually any email, CRM, and document management system, meeting major security and data protection regulations.

The IDC MarketScape recommends considering OpenText, stating that “OpenText brings 30+ years of fax innovation, backed by a substantial ecosystem of technologies, partnerships, and support. Key strengths include intelligent fax automation paired with AI-driven workflows; deep integration with enterprise content and business applications; flexible deployment across cloud, private cloud, hybrid, and on-premises environments; and established expertise in regulated industries like healthcare, financial services, and the public sector. OpenText’s scale enables large, global deployments supported by an extensive partner ecosystem, a combination well suited to enterprises with complex, multiregion fax and document needs.”
