Jaguar TCS Racing enjoyed a near-perfect weekend of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship fortune in the Eternal City – after the chequered flag was waved, we checked in with our technology partners

Running and Transforming – in Rome

If you didn’t see the double-header in Rome, you missed a treat! After encouraging practice sessions, qualifying, and head-to-head races, Jaguar TCS Racing team drivers Mitch Evans and Sam Bird found themselves well placed on the grid for both races in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship in Rome, April 9-10.

But nothing quite prepared even the most ardent optimist for the outcome. Yes, in both races, Jaguar TCS Racing driver Mitch Evans beat all challengers to secure the victory. Evans makes history for Jaguar TCS Racing as the first driver to win both races in a double-header weekend in Rome. Furthermore, he becomes only the third driver in Formula E history to win an E-Prix on two consecutive days.

Jaguar TCS Racing’s points tally shot up to 73, putting the team in 5th overall in the team standings, and Mitch himself is 4th in driver standings with 51 of those points.

Partnering for Performance

Micro Focus is proud of our technical partnership with Jaguar TCS Racing, and we were thrilled with the success enjoyed by the team in Rome. Winning driver Evans was first to praise the team and the car, “Yesterday was amazing, but I knew it would be really hard to do repeat again today as these double-headers can be tricky. The Jaguar I-TYPE 5 has been just perfect.”

This underscores the mission of the partnership, best articulated by Jaguar TCS Team Principal, James Barclay. “Great race teams are resilient. They work hard to succeed every day, analyse every performance area, and work towards building a better future. We are proud to partner with Micro Focus to help us with digital transformation, business resilience, and analytics. Together, we’ll compete for more points, podiums and wins.”

Incisive Insight – All About the Data

The Micro Focus and Jaguar TCS Racing partnership was built around the desire to help understand and act upon key data elements before, during, and after races to provide insight and intelligence across all race elements, from free practice to qualifying to the E-Prix.

Foundational technology from Micro Focus’ Vertica and IDOL product lines is providing access, rapid understanding, and decision-making across unprecedented data sources to facilitate this goal.

For example, Micro Focus’ IDOL Media Server is being actively employed by the team and is now contributing to qualifying performance on race day with insights gained from captured data through previous race day sessions.

In addition, Vertica plays its part too, as explained to us when we asked for further thoughts from members of the winning team. We heard from Cristina Mañas Fernández, Performance Engineer for Mitch Evans’ team:

“Data analysis is king for our technical team to understand the performance envelope of the car and drive decisions going into, during and after a race weekend. Vertica is a centre piece of our data analysis structure process, serving as the data warehouse, this is the starting point of the analysis work which cascades from there. Our Data Science team focus is to make sure we do not leave any data point unturned, converting the raw data into metrics that are meaningful for our team of engineers.”

“The efficient management system that Vertica has its foundation on, means that not only can we centralise our data in a single place, but that we can also go from raw data points to processed metrics in a short lapse time.”

A Transformational Journey

Micro Focus began their partnership with Jaguar TCS Racing early in 2021 to help Jaguar TCS Racing push for more points, podiums, and wins in the fast-changing environment of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.

Final words from Jaguar TCS Racing driver Sam Bird – “The race car was fantastic, and Jaguar TCS Racing have done a stunning job in the break to transform what was a difficult start into a winning formula”.

Transform. We agree.

The sixth round of the 2022 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship takes place in Monte Carlo, Monaco on 30 April. For a closer look at the Micro Focus and Jaguar TCS Racing partnership, head over to the partnership web page.
