Healthcare CEOs Anticipate “Substantial Change” in IT Complexity

While attending HIMSS13 in New Orleans last month, I set aside some time to attend several of the education and roundtable sessions on offer. OpenText’s Information Exchange solutions were relevant to a number of the topics discussed, and one of the most interesting to me arose in a session called “Global Experiences with the Digital Hospital Framework.” The session cited real-world examples to provide a high-level overview of the sources of complexity in healthcare IT management, including:

  • Increased competition and new entrants
  • Advances in technologies and treatments
  • Consumer expectations for better quality, outcomes, and value
  • Globalization of healthcare
  • Critical resource shortages

One particularly compelling stat compared technological complexity in healthcare to that in other industries. According to a 2010 IBM Global CEO Study, 74% of healthcare CEOs anticipate “substantial change” in this area. This is a greater percentage than that reported by many other industries also known to be facing change, including entertainment, defense, automotive, retail, and airlines. Hearing such clear evidence of market need only reinforced my belief in the importance of events like HIMSS in bringing together providers, consultants, and vendors to share new technologies and best practices.

Fortunately, both the existing and anticipated complexities in healthcare IT can be greatly simplified by taking the time to develop a clear strategy. HIMSS is a great place to meet a variety of experts in person and begin identifying the solutions that best suit your organization’s needs.

OpenText offers a wide range of information exchange products designed to help healthcare providers, payers and suppliers communicate sensitive data—like protected health information—both quickly and securely. On premises or in the cloud and in whatever format you prefer, OpenText has a solution.

OpenText is proud to be a regular attendee of HIMSS events, and we are already looking forward to the 2014 Annual HIMSS Conference & Exhibition in Orlando, FL next February. Check the blog and our website for updates on our healthcare solutions, and be sure to find us at HIMSS14!
