Meet the OpenText Experts: Adam Howatson

As we gear up for Enterprise World 2016, I thought I would sit down with some of the folks who make this event such an amazing learning opportunity. Each week I will turn the spotlight on our OpenText experts. To kick us off, I sat down with OpenText CMO, Adam Howatson. Read our interview below to see why Adam is excited about this year’s event. What excites you most about the industry right now? We’re in a period of great change. We’re seeing the emergence and commercialization of extreme automation, predictive analysis and artificial intelligences along with cognitive computing. What excites me every day is that the best Sci-Fi I’ve read (I’m a big fan) is now becoming reality, and it’s organizations like OpenText that are paving the way! What does the digital world mean to you? The digital world is about digital engagement. Automation, integration and experience. If you’re not digital, you’re simply going to be left behind as we have seen in many prolific industry examples over the past 5 years. The digital world is exactly as it’s described; taking the best business and services available to our society today and ensuring they are fully equipped and transitioned to be key players in the future to come. A DAM Fine Time in New York – now on to Nashville

Last week I got to spend time with Jon Snow, Mr. Peanut, and some monster trucks – thanks to spending a day at one of the regular OpenText™ Media Management User Group Meetings. This gathering of Digital Asset Management aficionados was kindly hosted by HBO at their building in mid-town New York. As well as the use of their impressive theater we also got to enjoy some great views of The Empire State Building from the top floor location. Customers like HBO, Kraft-Heinz, Monster Energy, and others, shared how they use the Open Text Media Management (OTMM) platform as the core of their digital marketing and content channel distribution (you can see us in the photo at the top of this blog). In these meetings each customer brings new perspectives and insights on building business cases, implementation, usage, and extending the use of DAM across the enterprise. Another highlight of the day was the opportunity for the customers and partners in attendance to hear, and see, what is in the recent Release 16 version of OTMM, and ask detailed questions of the product team. The session was highly interactive with great questions, observations, and some impressive feature demos. Overall everyone seemed very impressed by what they saw of the latest release. These single day User Groups are a great place to network with industry peers and find out what other people are doing with a technology solution; as well as get ‘under the covers’ with the folks who are developing the software. We’ll be taking this approach to a whole new level at the upcoming OpenText™ Enterprise World conference in Nashville the week of July 11. The Rise of the Machines

Terminator’s Skynet and OpenText Core: I’ve recently identified some striking similarities between the two……the question is should we be concerned? I love the Terminator films and their depiction of technology running amok in the future. Of course, it’s horrifying to think about what could happen if physical machines controlled by one central system turned against humans, but – as a tech-head – it’s also fascinating to consider the technology behind it, and compare that to where we sit today. Just for fun, in this blog let’s explore some of the parallels between the fictitious Skynet and OpenText Core. Skynet vs. OpenText Core In the Terminator films, Skynet is a Global Digital Defence Network, one which eventually achieves self-awareness and begins a nuclear war. Yes, markedly different from OpenText Core, which allows business users to manage, access, and share information and collaborate from any device..….unless, that is, you consider it from a pure “knowledge is power” perspective. With hundreds of thousands of people uploading critical business information into one central system, imagine the combined knowledge that’s stored in OpenText Core. What secrets could it hold? What power could it give anyone, or anything that’s capable of mining it for its value? Ok, and back in the real world now, we call this capability “Analytics”, and it’s a big focus for us and our customers today, and likely to be even more so in the future. Constantly Evolving Like the liquid metal T1000 Terminator, which learned from the previous generation of Arnie-style T800 Terminators, OpenText Core is evolving. Built on 25 years of OpenText leadership in information governance and compliance, Core is seamlessly integrated with OpenText Content Suite. It has been built from the ground up to function as a next generation, cloud-based ECM service and is continually evolving – partly based on feedback in user forums to ensure it keeps getting better and better. After being available for only a year, Core has already had 12 updates to enhance its power. Difficult to Destroy If human resistance fighters (or, perhaps more likely, a natural disaster) were able to locate the source of OpenText Core and destroy it, they’d be sorely disappointed to find that Core would just carry on as normal. If you destroy one node it will instantly “heal” (just like the liquid metal Terminators!). With Core, physical hardware duplication in multiple hosting sites would simply and seamlessly route the information and administration through another node. Core has never gone offline. Core is self-healing and always available. Postscript – to save you the effort of leaving a comment to highlight the flaws in my arguments here, I’ll point out a few inconsistencies now below: To allay fears, it is indeed impossible for any one source to access all the information stored in Core. It’s securely encrypted and managed in completely separate tenants for each customer, so, in truth, it wouldn’t form the best source of centralized human knowledge for AI to farm. Besides, we all know the internet itself would be an easier source of information for AI to turn machines against humans. Core is built for business, so the information it holds would be more about corporate knowledge and intellectual property than matters of national defence. Truth is, I can’t see the collaborative efforts of Company X’s marketing department being all that detrimental to mankind’s survival. In the film series, it all started to go wrong for humans on August 29, 2003, when Skynet became self-aware. I’m not sure when Core will become self-aware and it’s currently not on the development roadmap, but who knows – maybe that feature is being held back for a big announcement at Enterprise World in July. So, yes, there are a few leaps in both faith and logic in my argument – but this was all just a bit of fun. We all know this could never really happen. Right?

Key Takeaways from My First Enterprise World

Before Enterprise World 2015, I blogged about the benefits I hoped to achieve by attending the annual OpenText get-together for the first time. My list came down to three priorities: Interaction with colleagues, partners, and customers Putting it all together (in terms of OpenText products and services) Getting energized I’m happy to say I was successful on all three fronts. I was able to connect with many OpenText colleagues from around the world, learned about some exciting technology from key partners, and perhaps most importantly, I had the pleasure of connecting with many Brava! customers about their needs, experiences, and challenges. Product manager Mark Farlin and I gave a session on what’s new in Brava! and what the roadmap holds, and I truly appreciate the fantastic attendance. We had great questions and follow-up from it. I know that many customers weren’t able to attend Enterprise World, so I encourage anyone to email me with questions. or comment below and share how you use Brava!. We need, want, and embrace your valuable feedback. In terms of my second goal of seeing the whole picture, both from an OpenText product standpoint and a larger industry-wide focus, I can honestly say I learned something at every session I attended, but I most enjoyed the sessions where customers talked about their digital transformation journeys. While they spanned a wide range of industries and the “disruptor” event that precipitated their change varied, their goals and the benefits they realized were often surprisingly similar. And, having achieved my first two goals, it naturally ensured the third— getting energized— would fall right in line. When you listen to customers talk enthusiastically about how digital transformation has enhanced their enterprises— how much faster, more efficient, more compliant and more productive their organizations now are, it’s hard not to come away invigorated. To be fair, not every conversation I had was crammed with glowing acclaim, but that’s okay; the beauty of a forum like Enterprise World is that all conversations with customers are motivating. We’re focused on getting to the solution so customers can realize their digital vision. So my first Enterprise World was a resounding success. If you didn’t make it this time, I encourage you to plan on attending Enterprise World 2016 in Nashville this coming July. I look forward to seeing you there.

What Happened in Vegas

The last time I was in Las Vegas, the now massive New York New York hotel was a mere fenced-off hole in the ground. There was no Bellagio, no Venetian, and certainly no Wynn, Aria or Cosmopolitan. Las Vegas Boulevard was fun and colorful, and at that time you could see more of the hotels that sit just off the Strip. Of course, there was gaming and adult attractions, and the hotels were all fun and unique, but Las Vegas was certainly not the luxurious, high end adult playground it is now. Coincidentally, the last time OpenText took its annual Enterprise World user conference to Las Vegas was in February of 1998, less than a year after my visit. Back then, Enterprise World was called LiveLinkUp—a tribute to our LiveLink product, now known as Content Server. OpenText was helping to pioneer the World Wide Web and discover the potential of a connected, digital world. At that time, we focused primarily on Content Management solutions and had yet to step into the realms of Digital Asset Management, Fax Solutions or Customer Experience Management. Like Las Vegas, OpenText has grown and matured a lot over the past decade. So too has Enterprise World. There is so much to learn and hear about at the conference, and so many of our partners and customers participate. The 2015 installment was the fourth Enterprise World I’ve had the privilege of attending, and each year I am blown away by the stories of innovation and success shared by our product teams and customers. Photo credit: Julie Millard @JulieMillard3] While the technology, thought leadership, presentations and sneak peeks are great, what really gets me excited for Enterprise World each year is the chance to meet and connect with people I work with, but never get to see. As the guy who coordinates OpenText Live webinars, I work with OpenText experts and partners from all over the world on a regular basis. It wasn’t until I made it to Enterprise World 2012 in Orlando that I was able to meet Alister and Damien from Fastman (who were working out of Australia at the time), Aaron and Gordon from KineMatik (of Ireland and San Francisco, respectively), the eDOCS crew from Florida, Web Site Management experts from Germany, and so many others. Customers also get the opportunity to meet with people they’ve worked with, sometimes over many years. At the conference, we’re given every opportunity to network like this, and to have a great time while doing it. Conference attendees are generally focused on presented materials and soaking in the open tap of information during training, breakout and keynote sessions, so this isn’t the best time to network. The Expo hall is a good place to meet up with people, but can be busy and full of people trying to get the most out of their time between sessions. Luckily, the people at Enterprise World, whether they be OpenText employees, partners or customers, are always eager to meet up in the evenings and hang out. Over the past few years I’ve met some great people and am happy to keep in touch after the event (shout out to Steve, Alan, Tom and Alaina). OpenText hosted a partner event at the MGM Grand’s Hakkasan night club on Monday, and invited everyone to OMNIA at Caesar’s Palace on Thursday. But throughout the week people got together for dinners, walks around the city and shows as they spent some time getting to know one another. The Backstage Pass to OpenText Suite 16 & OpenText Cloud 16

We just shared some huge news with our attendees here at Enterprise World in Las Vegas: we’ve presented an exclusive future roadmap unveiling OpenText Suite 16 and OpenText Cloud 16—the next generation of our EIM offerings that will become available March 2016. We shared a lot of details about Suite 16 and Cloud 16 in our press release (you can read it here), but we couldn’t fit in all the thinking that went into this release. Strategic principles of OpenText Suite 16 & Cloud 16 From what we’ve experienced and from what our customers tell us they want and need, we came up with a dream list of innovations for an enterprise to make the most of digital disruption. We focused on that list of strategic principles across our entire Suite 16 and Cloud 16 offerings. Below is what was going through our heads: 1. Deepen functionality across all suites. This is a major release, full of new features and innovations. Keeping in mind our customers’ suggestions, we significantly deepened functionality throughout the offerings. Practically every product line is raising the bar in terms of customer value proposition and competitive differentiation. Check out the press release for some of the highlights, and watch for more details as we launch the new suites and cloud offerings in March. 2. Help customers transition to the cloud. Right off the top, we wanted to be sure to offer all of our suites in the cloud, available as a subscription or as managed cloud services. That was a must-do, but then we took it further and added integration with other cloud products such as Salesforce® and Office 365®. We also added new Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) applications, such as OpenText Core, PowerDocs, and Archive Center, to enable as much flexibility and savings as possible—customers want what they need, and no one wants to pay for more than they need. 3. Focus on user experience and remove barriers to user adoption. Enterprise productivity begins by removing the barriers to adoption—the easier it is to use, the more they use it—so we invested heavily in improving the user experience across all the suites (in the browser as well as on mobile devices). We put a big focus on HTML5-based responsive experience, and customers who got to preview the new UI of products such as Content Suite or Media Management this week are raving about it. The improved user experience is one of the most noticeable innovations in Suite 16 and Cloud 16. In fact, this alone makes upgrading worthwhile. 4. Integrate with more enterprise applications and across the suites (with an extra focus on analytics). We’ve added integration with more enterprise apps, like Salesforce and SuccessFactors®, in addition to SAP®, Oracle®, and Microsoft®. And there is major integration between the suites. For example, OpenText Process Suite fully integrates with OpenText Content Suite, Archive Center, Media Management, Capture Center, CCM—speaking of CCM, that integrates with OpenText WEM, DAM, CS, Notifications…it goes on and on across all the suites, enabling us to solve customer problems no other vendor can solve. We also put an extra focus on analytics, which is itself a new suite, and it’s embedded into all the other suites, which brings out even more value from existing deployments. 5. Deliver information flows as a way to solve complex problems. All the products in the world are not going to solve real business problem if they’re not integrated in a way that follows the logical flow of information through the business processes and applications. That’s why we focus on the core information flow from information-centric flows, such as capture-to-disposition, create-to-consume, and incident-to resolution, all the way to business flows such as procure-to-pay. For more efficient information flows, we’ve added automation to the Procure-to-Pay business process and delivery of P2P and a new entity-modeling layer in the Process Suite platform, and we’ve extended process-centric collaboration and information sharing. 6. Provide more value from existing deployments. When you can get more value out of existing deployments, you reduce the total cost of ownership. New capabilities, pervasive use of analytics, new UI, focus on cost of ownership, cloud delivery, and subscription-based pricing bring more flexibility and value to the enterprise. Each of these strategic principles makes upgrading to Suite 16 and Cloud 16 worthwhile. This is a milestone release that existing customers will love and want to upgrade to. OnLiving; Deloitte and SAP Keynote

On Thursday, OpenText CEO Mark Barrenechea took us on a heartfelt journey of his successful recovery from leukemia this year, an experience he described as “the most difficult journey in his life.” In February, Barrenechea was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia — a disease that he described as “complex” and one that “wanted to win.” At one point, his DNA mutated after receiving chemotherapy, rendering all forms of chemotherapy completely ineffective. Doctors lowered Barrenechea’s chance of survival to 10%. Despite several months of fighting for his life, Barrenechea never missed a day of work at OpenText. He cited his decision to continue doing what he loves as essential to his resolve. Barrenechea studied his disease down to “the atomic level,” allowing him to be his own best advocate in the face of difficult decisions. Tying back to the world of business, Barrenechea encouraged executives to learn one or two problems down to the atomic level each year. Rather than leading to micromanagement, Barrenechea said expertise makes for better executives and better corporate teams. Barrenechea said his goal in talking about his diagnoses, treatment, and recovery from leukemia was to help others dealing with personal challenges. “If I can help at least one person, [this talk] will have been an hour well spent.” Next up was Rodolpho Cardenuto, president of Global Partner Operations at SAP. Cardenuto spoke about SAP’s long-standing partnership with OpenText and advocated for the transition to digital technology. Cardenuto said that despite 90% of CEOs believing that digital technology will impact their businesses, only 16% are taking action, adding that early adopters are winning marketshare. Lastly, Bill Briggs, CTO of Deloitte Consulting, spoke about the five forces pushing digital transformation forward: analytics, the rethinking of work processes, the business of IT, the cloud, and core modernization. Briggs said consumers have been largely responsible for driving modernization to date, but that enterprises will assume that role in the future.

Barrenechea Announces Release of OpenText Suite 16 and OpenText Cloud 16

OpenText’s Enterprise World 2015 kicked off Wednesday with OpenText CEO Mark Barrenechea discussing his predictions on the future of Enterprise Information Management (EIM), and announcing the company’s largest ever product release with the upcoming OpenText Suite 16 and OpenText Cloud 16. Available in the spring of 2016, OpenText Suite 16 addresses four key element of EIM – Enterprise Content Management (ECM), Business Process Management (BPM), Customer Experience Management (CEM) and Analytics. The company’s cloud-based offering, OpenText Cloud 16, addresses those same solutions plus Business Networks, and will be deployable on both the OpenText Cloud and third-party cloud platforms. Addressing the question of whether customers should go with OpenText Suite 16 or OpenText Cloud 16, Barrenechea said the world “remains hybrid” and that OpenText is modeling its business and its products to give customers the maximum choice in terms of deployment options – on-premises, in the cloud, or a hybrid model – depending on business requirements and corporate IT strategy. Barrenechea said that OpenText is the leading provider of EIM solutions, with over 80% of the Fortune 5000 currently using OpenText software. The company is committed to being the number one vendor in all five areas of EIM – investing over $200 million a year in engineering to realize that goal. Barrenechea spent some time discussing the factors driving digital disruption across markets. Factors like the changing workforce, expectations of “millennial” employees and customers, and the move to mobile and device-driven access to services are having a radical impact on mature, established businesses on a global basis. Citing the impact of digital disruption, Barrenechea gave the example of the US insurance industry, which maintains a model of insurance agents selling to the customer. But with the average age of an insurance agent being 52, this model is becoming increasingly irrelevant. Consumers are looking to bypass agents altogether, and insurance companies are looking to digital to deliver compelling experiences for customers that service all their needs. Barrenechea’s mantra- in order to stay relevant, companies must disrupt or they will be disrupted. After his keynote, Barrenechea was followed on stage by comedian Mike Myers, who wore a bright blue Toronto Maple Leafs uniform, a nod to his Toronto upbringing. Myers spoke passionately about his Canadian background, applauding what makes Canada different from its nearest neighbor, and shared some experiences about his acting career and the state of the entertainment industry. He also talked about how digital is having a profound effect on how films are made, distributed and watched.

OpenText Announced Deeper Integration with DocuSign

OpenText and DocuSign have announced new integrations to help OpenText enterprise customers securely create and route documents for electronic signature. OpenText has also agreed to resell DocuSign software as part of the new arrangement. Obtaining written signatures is often the most time consuming step in document processing. But, with the DocuSign integration, OpenText users now have a digital way to obtain signatures, as well as get a court-admissible audit trail to help comply with information governance needs. “By breaking the digital workflow, organizations risk losing track of the status of the document,” said Scott Harrison, senior director of business development for DocuSign. “We’re a natural fit for OpenText because we make it easier and faster for the user.” Leveraging OpenText’s large global customer base, Harrison is excited to expand DocuSign’s own reach overseas to help grow the dynamic company. DocuSign is now commonly used in the real estate, financial services, insurance, high tech, life sciences, and health care industries.
