On Monday, the OpenText Innovation Tour kicked off in Sydney, Australia with an on-stage presentation from CEO and CTO Mark Barrenechea. In addition to a look at new and upcoming product innovations, Mark provided an overview of recent OpenText acquisitions and OpenText’s position as the leading provider of Enterprise Information Management (EIM) technologies and services. OpenText EIM enables the flow of information from Engagement to Insight, allowing customers to extract value from information throughout the flow. Our newest project, Magellan, will use open standards, open algorithms and machine learning to enable customers to make sense of massive pools of data and harness the power of their information. Building on Mark’s presentation, OpenText CMO Adam Howatson (always one of my favorite presenters) provided an update on OpenText™ Suite 16 EP1 and an overview of our plans for EP2, due in mid-2017. Unstructured data continues to increase at a phenomenal pace and these Enhancement Packs are designed so OpenText can respond quickly to customer recommendations. For example, EP1 extends ECM to SalesForce and SuccessFactors, enabling our customers to successfully manage and gain insight from their CRM and Human Resources systems. We’re not the only people listening to customers. Special guest Michael Barnes of Forrester later took the stage to provide insight into what he calls the “Customer-obsessed operating model”. It is imperative that we look at the experience we create for customers from their point of view, and understand how every interaction affects that experience. In the age of the customer, it is important that we take what we learn from our customers’ journey and translate that insight into an improved experience. Using our EIM technology, we can coordinate and technically optimize the experience to better serve, delight and engage customers. What I enjoy most about the Innovation Tour is how it brings together OpenText customers, partners and staff from many geographies and allows us to discuss opportunities and solutions. In Sydney, we are speaking with customers from all across Australia, and New Zealand, a distance of almost 5,300 km. Tracy Parsons of the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) joined OpenText President Steve Murphy on stage to discuss the NZTA’s EIM implementation. Steve and Tracy discussed how the NZTA are using a cloud-based EIM implementation that includes both Content and Process Suites to digitalize business process, provide access to mobile workers and offer regulatory compliance. I’ve heard plenty of interesting success stories from customers during the event. The Sydney Innovation Tour is the first of eight stops, with Singapore on December 1st, followed by Tokyo on December 8th. I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible at the events. Simply viewing an ECM platform as a one-way repository for information storage and compliance doesn’t cut it anymore. Digital enterprises, and the knowledge workers that drive them, need so much more from technology in today’s digital environment: Effortless, light-touch collaboration is now critical, and increasingly decentralized business functions have created siloes of hidden-gem data that need to be bridged for information to flow freely to those that need it. A new generation of ECM technologies must facilitate this. They have the sharing and social capabilities to be the enterprise standard for collaboration. They have the integration capabilities to act as a central information hub, using metadata to push information in the right context at the right time to those who need it to enhance productivity. They have the ability to automate governance for security and risk management. This new approach to ECM is so pivotal, we believe Gartner amended their internal definition of what comprises an effective ECM platform in today’s digital environment. As a result, the 2016 MQ had two fewer leaders compared to the previous year resulting in a decrease from six to four. So, yes, the ECM landscape is definitely changing. And OpenText is proud to be recognized as a leader in this new era of information management. It Takes a Team to Win it all

Last week, the Chicago Cubs ended a 108-year MLB championship drought by winning one of the most exciting games in the long history of baseball. Both teams put on an inspiring display of perseverance, skill and clutch opportunism. I—along with many of you, I’m sure—was happy to stay up late to catch the whole thing. After the game, Cubs catcher David Ross—who had just played his final professional baseball game—described his teammates as “a group of resilient winners” who “never quit”, and expressed sincere pride in the fact that his team had utilized every member of their team to win it all. We have the same drive for greatness at OpenText. Over the past 25 years, we have grown our business through the acquisition of winning ideas, talent and solutions, and through the development of innovative technologies. Born as a university start-up, we are now a world-leader in Enterprise Information Management (EIM) solutions with no intention of slowing down. As Mr. Ross explained, it takes a team to succeed. That’s why earlier this week we invited many of you—our customers—to complete a short survey and let us know how we can better help you meet and exceed your business goals. In my last blog I wrote about the importance of knowing customers on an individual level in order to serve them better. Our annual survey helps us better understand you and your needs. The Future of Information: OpenText Release 16 – Robust Information Security

As the economy moves online, businesses are become more vulnerable to cyberattacks. The list of casualties grows every day, with big names falling victim to cyber breaches. The attacks are becoming more sophisticated and harder to trace, and they’re becoming more frequent. Cybersecurity is a critical requirement for combatting trends such as nation-state backed espionage, more vulnerable service providers, big data, mobile apps, and encryption failures. The protection of corporate Intellectual Property (IP) is becoming an increasing concern for IT organizations as confidential information is housed in digital format. Threats from both inside and outside the company must be considered. During the Digital Revolution, organizations need to assume that they are under attack every day and that the bad guys are already on their network. Ultimately, organizations need to build a moat around their most important systems. No real risk can be mitigated to a zero percent likelihood of occurring, and some risks are 100 percent likely to happen. So how can the digital enterprise determine which risks to mitigate and what consequences to prepare for? According to research, the average organization needs to keep one percent of its information and 69 percent of enterprise information can be thrown out without suffering negative consequences. Keeping everything means higher storage and infrastructure costs. In instances of litigation, the cost of investigation increases as content is searched, examined, and reviewed across many sources. With today’s dramatic growth in content volume, this approach is not tenable. Not all information is created equally and not all information exposes an organization to the same risk. EIM permits secure access to information on a “need to know” basis, while preserving an archive of information. The more data an organization stores and manages, the greater the risks for security breaches and non-compliance. To protect enterprise information, organizations need to practice the fundamentals really well. Most companies forget that security is all about “back to basics”: Employees need education. Fifty percent of all cyber security issues are caused by a lack of education and “naive” employee actions. The next 25 percent comes from hardware or software assets that are not up to date. Are they running an outdated email client, for example, that has known vulnerabilities? Is the perimeter defined and protected, or were the gates left open? The response time on shutting the gates is critically important. These basics will make organizations 95 percent secure. Along with investment in an Enterprise Information Management (EIM) platform. OpenText Release 16 – Defense in Depth EIM is designed to protect information where it is used: at the point of interaction in the application itself, offering security mechanisms such as access and permissions, information audit capabilities, and secure information exchange built right into the system. Enterprise World Highlights: ECM Evolves and Heads Into the Cloud

And, we’re back in 3…2…1: Happy August! After a few crazy months book-ended by the most extensive product release in OpenText history and a truly insightful, inspiring week at Enterprise World 2016, I’ve been able to make the most of a nice vacation and reflect a bit on how our annual flagship event both summarized and expanded on the happenings of the first half of the year. Interest in the Cloud is Exploding While it’s no secret that the cloud is becoming a priority for many organizations, I was amazed to see just how much interest in it had mushroomed from last Enterprise World to this one. Cloud-based breakout sessions such as Enterprise Managed Services in the OpenText Cloud and Top Questions you need to ask when Upgrading ECM to the Cloud were standing room only in Nashville. A marked increase from last year and a remarkable progression from two years ago when cloud breakouts were more of a curiosity than a must-see. My main observation from talking with the attendees at this year’s cloud-focused sessions? It’s clear that, while many organizations are still just getting their feet wet, most see an ECM future that involves fully harnessing the power of cloud-based solutions. Furthermore, the current and proposed use cases I had the pleasure of hearing about are as endless as, well, a cloud-dotted sky. Organizations are utilizing the cloud to focus on everything from the tactical—freeing up ECM administration resources—to enterprise-level strategic initiatives designed to push innovation on new business solutions. It was also noteworthy that these discussions were consistently peppered with the sort of benefit statements CFOs like to hear; things like lowering capital costs and shifting to more economical SaaS-structured payment models. The cloud devotees have really been doing their homework! Re-Thinking ECM is Definitely a “Thing” The role of ECM is changing and organizations are successfully shifting to viewing ECM in a new light. This year, I had strikingly fewer discussions devoted to traditional ECM terms like storage, compliance, governance, and records management. Customer emphasis is now on how to best elevate ECM solutions to enhance productivity for processes and people. Optimal governance is just expected. My take on this: ECM has matured and many organizations are comfortable with the baseline management of the content currently under the purview of their ECM platforms. Existing ECM implementations are doing their job storing content and ensuring that information is following the appropriate governance path throughout its lifecycle. The general feeling is, that’s fine, but not enough. Most of the customers that I spoke to are now looking for ECM to do more as they target digital transformation in a post-analog world. The reasons? They’re bang-on in envisioning a new competitive and customer service landscape where ALL the digital data in an organization has to be easily accessible to play a symbiotic role in success. And they’re not exactly eager to approach the powers that be with capital requests for new platforms and technologies to try and achieve it. Hence, questions revolved around accomplishing this by extending the reach of their tried-and-true ECM platforms further into business processes and collaborative activities. At times I felt like a hi-tech relationship counsellor as discussions delved into methods to facilitate better communication between Oracle and Salesforce or why it’s critical for structured and unstructured information to come together to contribute to a common goal. Bottom line: all this, and much more, is possible with new advances in ECM capabilities. We can show you how. Of course, Enterprise World made for the perfect forum to host these discussions. Enterprise Content Management (ECM) was supposed to be a single solution to all of the myriad business problems. It would let the business owners dictate where and how all data would be stored and structured, apply user rights and retention policies, and most importantly, control what happened to that data over its lifetime. But we all know how that story ended. Unlock the Value of Your Supply Chain Through Embedded Analytics

Over the past few months I have posted a couple of blogs relating to the use of analytics in the supply chain. The first one really discussed the ‘why’ in terms of the reasons for applying analytics to supply chain operations, Understanding the Basics of Supply Chain Analytics. The second blog discussed the ‘how’, in terms of the methods of obtaining meaningful insights from B2B transactions flowing between trading partners, Achieve Deeper Supply Chain Intelligence with Trading Grid Analytics. The blogs were written in support of our recently announced OpenText™ Trading Grid Analytics, one of the many Business Network related offerings in Release 16. Release 16 is the most comprehensive set of products to be released by OpenText to enable companies to build out their digital platforms and enable a better way to work. Now those that have followed my blogs over the years will know that I have worked with many analyst firms to produce white papers and studies and I guess it was only appropriate that I should be fortunate to work with an outside analyst on a thought leadership white paper relating to analytics in the supply chain. I engaged with IDC to write a paper entitled, Unlock the Value of Your Supply Chain Through Embedded Analytics. IDC has been producing some interesting content over the years in support of their ‘Third Platform’ model which embraces IoT, cloud, mobile and big data and how companies can leverage these technologies for increased competitive advantage. The aim of our new analytics related white paper was to discuss the business benefits of embedding analytics into the transaction flows across a business network. Compared to other business intelligence and end user analytics solutions, OpenText is in a unique position as we own our Business Network and we are able to introspect the 16 billion EDI transactions flowing across our network. IDC leveraged a relatively new management theory called VUCA which stands for Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity to discuss how analytics can bring better insights into business operations. VUCA was originally defined in the military field and for our paper IDC aligned VUCA so that it leverage against a more connected, information-centric and synchronized business network, namely Velocity, Unity, Coordination and Analysis. I am not going to highlight too much content from the paper but here is one interesting quote from the paper. “It is the view of IDC that the best supply chains will be those that have the ability to quickly analyze large amounts of disparate data and disseminate business insights to decision makers in real time or close to real time. Businesses that consistently fail to do this will find themselves at an increasing competitive disadvantage and locked into a reactionary cycle of firefighting. We’re closing in on two months since we unveiled the most significant release in the history of OpenText, including, of course, a powerful new version of OpenText™ Content Suite 16. After a busy few months with the ECM product team doing the ‘CS16 show and tell’ via the OT Live webinar series, our next stop is in-the-flesh in Nashville at Enterprise World 2016. Following so closely on the heels of the Release 16 launch, this year’s event is going to have a special vibe: There’ll be less, “Let’s talk about what’s coming!” and a lot more, “Let see how to leverage what’s here!” But, of course, we aren’t the only ones participating in a little ‘show and tell’ at Enterprise World. This conference is truly a gathering of the top minds in ECM—including those of you who work with the OpenText ECM solutions every day! I encourage you to read a few of the most recent reports by the respected industry analysts who spend their careers scrutinizing what we all mean when we talk about how digital disruption is transforming information management. Here are a few findings from key ECM analysts’ latest reports: In 2015, Forrester split their ECM Wave into two distinct reports to better address the use cases most organizations are adopting for ECM. Supporting the ECM value of process productivity, the Forrester Wave: ECM Transactional Content Services, Q3 2015 cited OpenText for having the broadest backbone for embedding ECM in enterprise applications. In this report Forrester commented “We also like OpenText’s vision for the ‘connected workspace,’ which organizes unstructured information, folders, tasks, and milestones. This allows transactional workers to swarm a customer exception with social, collaboration, and ECM capabilities.” And on the personal productivity side of the house, the Forrester Wave: ECM Business Content Services, Q3 2015 commended OpenText for investing in secure file-sharing, synchronization, and team collaboration. Gartner sees a similar shift in the use cases for enterprise content management with transactional content management, compliance, and digital workplace scenarios taking precedence amongst their clients. In the 2015 Gartner Magic Quadrant for ECM our efforts in both process productivity and control are lauded with Gartner calling our offering “a strong option for businesses looking for solid ECM functionality to address information governance requirements,” while highlighting our strong technical partnerships with SAP®, Microsoft®, and Oracle®. And in the Gartner Critical Capabilities for Enterprise Content Management: Compliance and Records Management OpenText scored the highest of any vendor on Trusted System of Record, Regulatory Compliance, and Long-Term Digital Preservation. Other analysts also are weighing in on the role of ECM in the path to digital transformation. Ovum Decision Matrix: Selecting an Enterprise Content Management Solution, 2015–16 our ECM portfolio was called “one of the most comprehensive” with capabilities in every category of ECM. Nucleus Research ECM Technology Value Matrix 2015: Liked our “wide range of functionality with tight integration, making the transfer of information between different products or applications much smoother.” Info Tech Content and Email Archiving Vendor Landscape states that OpenText has the “most comprehensive solution in the landscape due largely to the traditional content management strengths of the vendor” and particularly called out our “wide set of deployment and management settings to deal with complex data sovereignty and compliance issues.” Does that get you in the mood for a trip to the music city?
