The last article in my series of blogs about content and trends, based on meetings and a presentation in Houston, Texas.
The last in a three-part series of posts from Houston, this article discusses the potential for mobile content access and management in the Oil & Gas industry.
Mobile devices like cell phones, BlackBerrys, iPhones, iPads have already had a profound effect on the way we do business. Mobility gives people the ability to immediately access, share, and act on information. Mobile access to information will have a major impact on the Oil & Gas industry, especially when combined with internal processes and content from external sources.
Mobility is something that the oil industry can take advantage of. Immediate access to content means that decisions can be made more quickly and records of these decisions can be captured to maintain the audit trail. So people can be more productive and protected at the same time. But mobile access won’t be limited to enterprise content; information could be pulled from a number of sources – news, maps, weather, traffic updates, and more – to present users with a visual overview based on a video mashup. This combination of content from external and internal sources is something that the Oil & Gas industry could use for crisis management, for example.
Just as digital natives will want to use to familiar tools like social media to collaborate inside the firewall, they will expect support for their many devices. As a result, IT departments in the industry will have to support numerous devices. The short of it: organizations will have to be prepared as social media applications, video mashups, and mobile devices move into an enterprise setting.
